The eyes of man are never satisfied

“Hell and Destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.”

-Proverbs 27:20

Hell is never full and Destruction never ceases. They go on and on. There is no point when Hell says, “Enough, there is no more room down here!” There is never a time when destruction says, “There has been too much destruction, we need to stop!” It doesn’t happen. It won’t happen.

Solomon goes on to compare this to the eyes of man. Just as Hell is never full, so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

This is an important lesson to learn. The bible is talking about the ‘lust of the eyes’ here. The same thing that John talked about over in 1 John 2:16. The bible is saying that no matter how much we look and lust at, we will always end up wanting more and more. The cycle will never stop. If we allow ourselves to continue to look then we will go deeper and deeper into a dirtier pit of sin that never ends.

There are two main things, it seems, that men, in particular, lust after with their eyes. One is the obvious sexual lust and the other is violence. Both of them work the say way. Both of them start out small, and move into deeper and deeper depravity.

Take the Romans for example. They could never get enough of the gladiator games. They needed more and more bloodshed. They were never satisfied.

And take our society today as an example of sexual depravity. We have terrible, despicable pornography that is beyond comprehension to the point where men watch little children being brutally raped by grown men. Their lust wasn’t satisfied by the ‘softer’ pornography – it never will be. It will never be enough. People only stop when the recognize that fact. Don’t keep chasing the tail that you will never catch.

So recognize that your eyes will never be satisfied and instead focus your efforts on seeking God. He will bring to a place of satisfaction, but also to a place of never ending adventure! Glory to God!
