Child like faith?

“The naïve believes everything, but the prudent man considers his steps.”

-Proverbs 14:15

I can’t find anywhere in the bible where it tells us to have faith like a child.   The reason for that is that I don’t think its in there.  We’re not supposed to have faith like a child.  We are supposed to have faith, but not child-like faith.  Actually the bible tells us to have the faith of God (Mark 11:22), or you can say it like this: the God kind of faith.  We need to have God-like faith, not child like faith.

But doesn’t Jesus say that to come to Him we must become like little children?  Yes he does.  Look at what he says:

Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ‘”

-Matthew 18:2-4

Jesus tells us to become like little children, but he uses the illustration of a little child to demonstrate humility. Notice verse 4, “Therefore whoever humbles himself..”

Children are very humble.  They are never too proud to ask for help.  Many adults are too proud to ask for help.  Those who are proud will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus tells us to humble ourselves as little children, but not to have faith as a child.  Why is this important?  Because too many christians’ faith is child-like.  They believe anything.  Children believe anything. They’ll believe you if you tell them there is a tooth fairy, or a Santa Clause that comes down the chimney, or that there is a boogy man in the closet.    The bible says that the “naive believes everything.” (Pr 14:15)

We need to have a faith that is based off of firm truths.  We need to believe the bible because it is a reliable written account of many first hand witnesses that agree with each other in harmony, not because someone tells us to believe it.  We also believe because God bears witness with signs and wonders and various gifts of the Holy Spirit (Heb 2:4).

So don’t have child-like faith.  Have God-like faith, and move mountains!
