But I have a few things against you… Rev 2:14
Imagine the feelings the people of this church felt when Jesus Christ Himself said to them, ‘I have a few things against you.’ I know the feeling I have when I am confronted in such a way by people of the earth who hold authority over me and responsibility over me. I feel terrible. But how much worse a feeling when the Lord of our hearts and salvation does so. But despite the wrenching it would cause to our hearts, He still does it for our benefit, that we can be partakers of His Holiness.
But we should not wait for His correction. If He has anything against us, let’s find out what it is now, so we can correct it. It may be that our hearts would be too hardened if we wait.
Is there anything in your life that Jesus may have against you?
Its biblical for us to examine ourselves in such a way. Paul told us that it is something we should do regularly:
1 Corinthians 11:28
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
And here also:
2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you are disqualified.
There are some people, if they would honestly examine themselves, who would find that they are disqualified. And that would be a good thing to find out, because at least they would no longer be living in a deception. They could then make the necessary corrections.
What about you? If Jesus were to call you to account this very day, how would you fare? It would good for you to be honest with yourself. One day you will give an account, and on that day it will be too late to make corrections. It is not too late for you to make corrections now. Now is the time to do it. What does Jesus hold against you?
We should all come to the place quickly where we can say with Paul, ‘I know of nothing against myself’ (1 Cor 4:4). Once we know of anything against ourselves and do not correct it, we are in open rebellion against God. It is a dangerous place to be. It is a place where our hearts begin to grow more and more hardened. Hell rejoices and heaven mourns. Our prayer life will cease and only become a ritualistic motion that God has no pleasure in. Nothing in our lives will be pleasing to God until we make that one issue right, because remember that ‘to obey is better than sacrifice'(1 Sam 15:22).
What does Jesus hold against you? Is there something that He has spoken to you in the past that you haven’t addressed? It could be that your spiritually life is dry and unproductive because you haven’t dealt with something. How could God take you forward in your spiritual life if you are in disobedience? Maybe there is someone you need to forgive. Maybe there is some wrong that you need to make right. Maybe there is some sin in your life that you need to be rid off. Whatever it is, do it.
What is more important than having a heart right with God? The things of earth will quickly fade and everything you have ever lived for will be completely lost and meaningless unless it was done in God. Strive to live a life where you know nothing against yourself. Accomplish that by carefully examining yourself on a regular basis and then making corrections. If you do, then the day of judgment will be a good day for you. All the pains of the earth will fade away and only the glories of heaven will remain.
