The fool says in his heart, “there is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works. There is none who does good – Psalm 14:1
The bible doesn’t say much about atheism. This is mostly due the fact that there were not many atheists in ancient days. But there were some, for this verse in Psalm 14 addresses them.
The bible calls the atheist a fool. Now, I’m not trying to belittle people or resort to name calling, nor is this what the verse here is doing. But I want to think about why the bible uses the word ‘fool’ to refer to atheists.
The word ‘fool’ is used to refer to someone who makes a bad judgment. This could be judgement done hastily, or rashly, in lightness, or perhaps in anger. It could also be a judgement made in regards to preexisting bents. In other words: a judgment skewed due to a desire for things to turn out to some personal liking.
An example of this would be the person that says, “I think that sex before marriage is OK.” The question to ask regarding this topic is this: was this judgement made in honest review of the facts? Or could a desire to have sex have influence in this decision?
The honest person will admit that personal desire can play a big part in decision making. Making decisions this way is foolish.
Every single one of us have been fools. I, personally, have been the greatest of fools! I can’t count the number of times I have made a decision that was skewed by my own desires, rather than by reason and truth. We are all like this.
This understanding of skewed reasoning is the bible’s explanation of atheism.
If you think that atheists are simply honest seekers of truth, with absolutely no bias, you are badly mistaken. They are like the rest of us, prone to make foolish judgments based on their inner desires.
It is interesting to note, however, that most atheists pride themselves in being logical, reasonable, and sound in judgement. And certainly many of them are extremely intelligent in many areas. But the truth is that you can intellectually argue any point you want, even if you’re dead wrong. (Some of the smartest philosophers and scientists in the world subscribed to Nazism, for example).
So just because they are smart, doesn’t mean they are right.
Its funny actually, that they profess themselves to be so wise, because it’s exactly what the bible said they would do.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God, into an image like corruptible man–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. – Romans 1:22-23
In the bible days, the ancients changed the glory of God into natural things, just like the atheists do now (i.e. not God, but evolution). The ancients had to have a god that they could see and touch, just like the atheists do now (the atheist’s “god” is nature, and themselves). The ancients professed themselves to be so wise, ridiculing those who believed in a God they could not see, just like the atheists do now.
But why are atheists fools? It’s not solely because of their bias for personal lusts, but its also because the evidence of God’s existence is so plain. Atheists don’t like to hear it, and they think that have an argument that over comes it, but the truth is that nature is more than sufficient evidence for God. Those that don’t see it, don’t want to see it, or have been blinded.
whose minds the god of this age (Satan) has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel…should shine on them – 2 Corinthians 4:4
Those who reject truth in favor of their lusts are eventually given over to complete blindness. These people will swear up and down that they see no evidence of God in this world — and they don’t, because they are blind. No amount of evidence will ever be enough.
But, is nature really enough evidence for the existence of God? It is. And it’s not only evidence of His existence, but also a commentary of His attributes:
Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made (e.g. nature), even His eternal power and Godhead, so they are without excuse. – Romans 1:20
This passage tells us that we can understand through nature that there is a God, and that He is enormously powerful.
You don’t have to be a scientist to look into nature and see that things appear to be designed. Even evolutionists acknowledge this. A fish is designed to swim, a bird is designed to fly, a leopard is designed to run. Just like a building implies a builder, so design implies a Designer.*
Take a bird, for example. Look how effortlessly it soars through the sky. It took humans many years of careful thought and experimentation, tests and trials, to finally be able to fly — and we still look to nature for clues on how to be more efficient in flight. Are our less able machines products of design, but these natural masterpieces products of time and chance? No. All these wonders of nature show the glory of an infinite Mind.
And look at the Sun, blazing in its power. The whole word feels its heat, and so bright it is that the naked eye cannot bear its power. Humans know about heat, they know about light. Every human has felt the heat of a fire, and has seen its light. But even the most intense fire only heats a small radius. On a cold night, stepping just a few feet away from the fire will bring a chill. And stepping behind thick trees can block its light. Yet the Sun blazes so hot that the whole world feels its heat and shines so bright that the whole world sees its light. No human, in all his intellect, or the intellect of all humans combined, can produce the power of our nearest star (which itself is a fraction of the power of much brighter stars in the universe.) The immensity of this kind of power is beyond the scope of understanding. Not even all the nuclear bombs ever produced by humans can match a fraction of the continual power of the Sun.
How can such power exist? Can an honest mind really think that such things came by cosmic accident? No. Those that believe these things dismiss the idea of God ahead of time, so for them it HAD to happen – somehow.
A lot of over-thinking has blinded so many from the simple truth.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. – Psalms 19:1-4
God’s creation speaks to us, and we would be wise to listen to it. No person can plead ignorance, for every day speaks, and every night reveals the knowledge of God. Those that reject this ought to pray for God to open up their eyes, for the truth is plain before them.
Footnote
* Evolutionists will claim that this appearance of design is due to adaptation, but this is folly. Observable science (real science) tells us that animals only adapt within their kind, not from one kind to another. And this is only further proof of design — that they are designed to adapt
