What’s Happening with Hal Chaffee Ministries?
God has been at work and we are so glad that we can be a part of it!
Outdoor preaching is quite the occupation. Knowing that ‘few’ will make the journey through the narrow gate, we expect and receive a good bit of negative attention for what we do. Middle fingers, cuss words, and head shakes are a common occurrence. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Word of God is powerful. I know and am firmly convinced by the Word of God and by experience, that when the power of the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit come together, lives will be changed. The Word is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword… Heb 4:12.
Here’s a question that is often asked…
Is Street Preaching Effective?
“Is street preaching really effective? Is there a better way to do evangelism? Isn’t street preaching a bit antiquated?” These are important questions to ask. I’ve asked them all myself. If we are going to do evangelism, we need to do it in the most effective way possible. But after much soul-searching and prayer, I have come to the conclusion that these questions cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. You see, I’ve been in many churches in my life and I have found this: some are effective at their mission and some are not at all. Their effectiveness does not lie in whether they are a church or not, but in other factors. The same is true for street ministry. Throughout history, street ministry has been a huge part of the gospel mission. Multitudes have been saved by hearing the voice of a preacher on the streets. Some people may have never heard a good street preacher, but I have. There can be hardly anything more honoring to our Lord than a man or woman boldly proclaiming the gospel, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in public places (check out my friend Jacob Bock from OntheRedBox for a good example).
Unfortunately, there are many street ‘preachers’ that give Christ a bad name. All the more reason for those that are truly called to get out there and uphold the honor of Christ in the streets! I plan to do just that.
As far as the factors for effective street ministry, I must say a few things. Fancy words won’t do it. Great wisdom won’t either. The Lord has shown me the key to effective evangelism. It’s found in the same place where all the answers are found for whatever it is that you may need: The Bible. In First Corinthians chapter two, Paul lays out his very effective method of evangelism that he used when first coming to the city of Corinth. This is the style of evangelism that I strive to follow. Not persuasive words, not fancy wisdom, but God’s power: “And I, brethern, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
This is the type of evangelism that we strive to use. God demonstrating His Spirit; God showing His power. Continue to pray with us as we seek God for more of His power in the streets.
The Chaffee Family
It’s been quite an adventure for the Chaffee family in the past few months! I left a steady job for full-time evangelism, Katrina lost her job (due to company-wide layoffs), and then we found out we were pregnant! All these events (save the first) were completely unexpected! It has been an occasion for us to spend more time on our knees seeking God’s will and provision. In the midst of this, many of you have stepped up (many unaware of our situation) and have given. To you, we say, “Thank you!” We are nearer and nearer to meeting our monthly goal. If you haven’t given yet, please pray about becoming a monthly partner with this ministry. It’s really easy to give by visiting our website at halchaffee.com/partnergive. There, you can set up automatic monthly giving, if you’d like. You can also give by check to:
