Thanksgiving is Much More Important than You Think.
Thanksgiving. I don’t mean the day. I mean the act—the act of giving thanks. Its importance can’t be emphasized enough. The sin of failing to give thanks to God is among the very first things that trigger the downward spiral of an individual, and of a nation. It is among the first steps towards reprobation, that is, when God gives a man over to spiritual blindness. Paul speaks about this in Romans chapter one. He says that ‘although they knew Good, they did not glorify Him, nor were they thankful, but became futile in their thoughts and their foolish hearts were darkened.’ Failure to glorify and give thanks to God leads directly to the darkening of the heart. That is, failure to give thanks leads to an inability to see and understand spiritual things. Do you ever wonder why many of the unsaved of the world cannot see the simple evidences of God that are all around? This is one of the reasons they can’t. We need to pray fervently that God would have mercy on them and open their eyes. (continued below)
Thanksgiving should be on the lips of believers at all times. It is a fitting sacrifice of praise unto God, an act that keeps everything in the correct perspective. For the Christian, there is nothing that can happen to us that merits the disposal of a thankful heart. We have many temporal things to be thankful for, but even if they all are taken away in a moment we can still look up and say, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” We can be like Job, who although he lost everything, could still say, “I know that my Redeemer lives!.. And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God!” We have a great hope that others do not possess! What can separate us from the love of Christ? Who can snatch us out of His hand? If God be for us, who can be against us? My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever. Hallelujah!
The moment our heart ceases to be thankful, our spiritual decline begins. Practice being thankful every day, several times a day! There’s much to be thankful for! Thank God for your family, for your job, for your health, for your possessions. But most of all, thank God for the great salvation that has been purchased for you by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, the son of God.
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, going thanks to His name. – Hebrews 13:15
A Ministry Like Few Others
Three years ago this January, my wife and I stepped out in faith to pursue this ministry. It’s been such an adventure! A big THANK YOU to all that have contributed financially to make it possible. I’m continually amazed by how God has provided for us each month. Many times, we don’t know where the money is going to come from to get us through another month, but God has always supplied. And I know, if we are faithful to walk in the will of God, that He will continue to provide for us. Each time He has done it through one of you. For that, we say thank you.
As the year comes to a close, we would like to ask that you consider a year-end tax-deductible donation to Hal Chaffee Ministries. Your gift helps us to continue our work of reaching the lost where they are: on the streets. Each day we are on the streets, we talk directly to the lost, reasoning with them and urging them to put their faith in Jesus. Many of the people we encounter have never been to church or have no plans to visit a church. Many come out of a negative church experience. This type of ministry enables us to hear straight from the people about their spiritual and religious thoughts—right on the streets! We are often able to give simple answers to roadblocks in their minds. Sometimes we chat about deep issues. These are conversations that most of these people would not have unless we are out there to engage with them. Your gift enables us to be there.
We also boldly proclaim the gospel in public places. This, unfortunately, is a lost art that has been often left to weird fringe groups that spout hatred and erroneous doctrine. How unfortunate! And because of fear of being lumped in with hate groups, many gifted and anointed preachers clear away from the Biblical precedent of outdoor preaching. What a difference we could make if more ministers filled with the Holy Spirit and holy love went to the streets to proclaim the message of freedom! Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into His harvest! By supporting this ministry, you support love-filled gospel preaching being spread abroad in the streets.
When you give, you are a part of what we do, partners with us in the gospel. Just as Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians, because of their ‘partnership in the gospel.’ He recognized that it was by their giving that he was able to focus on the work that God had called them to do. I recognize that same partnership with you and desire also that ‘fruit may abound to your account.’
