This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men. Titus 3:8
One thing that Paul wanted Titus to ‘affirm CONSTANTLY’ was for christians to maintain good works. What does that mean? That means that we must be very careful not to get caught up with our own lives and we must continue to serve God through public service, feeding the poor, helping the hurting, teaching the uneducated, taking care of the elderly, and the like. The apostle James said that true religion is when we look after the widow and the orphan.
I’m very glad I read this scripture today because I have been convicted in my heart of my lack of good works. I have realized how little things in life eat up my time that I should be using to serve God. I have also realized how miserable life is when you only serve yourself.
Even so, good works must be done out of a heart of love that has been stirred up by the Lord through time in prayer and the word. Attempting good works in the flesh is boring and draining. The love of Christ should compel us.
