When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” Luke 8:28
I love this passage! It shows you how much of a wimp the devil is!
In this passage Jesus steps off of a boat in to the country of the Gadarenes. As soon as He steps off this demon-possessed man RUNS to him, falls on his face and says,”Please don’t torment me!,” kind of like an old dog runs to his master, wimpering, when he knows he’s in trouble. The demon inside the man is talking to Jesus, and he reveals to us some interesting facts about demons:
— Demons are scared of Jesus. I beg you, do not torment me! v. 28
So much for that dark, scary image we get from tv. Personally I think that many demons (though not all) are just really stupid and simply take commands from hierarchy. These demons are scared to death of Jesus because they know what he can do to them and they know what’s coming:
—They know that judgment is coming to them. Have you come to torment us before the time? Mt 8:29
These demons don’t really think they can win. They know that the battle is over, but they also know that, before their judgment comes, they can wreak havoc on willing souls. The bible says that the devil is angry because ‘he knows his time is short.’ The demons are like mischiefs who are simply trying to do as much damage as they can before the day comes.
— Demons can possess animals. Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. v. 33
Not that this matters very much, but it is interesting. So if your cat is going crazy…..hmm.
— A person can be possessed with more than one demon at a time. Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him.
Jesus cast seven demons out of Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2). The man in our passage had a ‘legion’ of demons. It seems logical that the more demons that you have the worse off you would be (as we can see in this man’s case). Therefore some demon possessed people are worse off then others.
— Some demons are more wicked then others. Luke 11:26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
This tells me that some demon possessed people are worse off than others.
I think there are a lot more demon possessed people then we realize. There is a false notion that demon possessed people are completely controlled by the demon. Not so. I would say that most demon possessed people are simply plagued by evil thoughts and desires. As they give in more and more to that demon only then does the evil have more and more power over their lives.
Are you demon possessed?
If you have uncontrollable desires and evil thoughts, you may be. If you have a serious chemical addiction, you may be. If you have freaky stuff happening to you because you have been involved in the occult, you may be. If you are cronically depressed, you may be. Tell that demon that he has to leave in Jesus name! Seek help from a minister that is knowledgeable in these matters. Spend time in prayer and praise and worship (demons hate that!). Fill your mind with Gods word.
